I trained them, supported them, knew their strengths. But I didn\u2019t understand just how capable they were until they had the opportunity to run the show for a few days while I was out of town.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>During that time, a particularly tense situation cropped up with a customer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Normally, I would\u2019ve jumped in, crafted the response myself, and made sure the message struck the right tone. But by the time I saw it, the issue had already been resolved.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And the message? Better than what I would\u2019ve written.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Clear, empathetic, firm. Everything it needed to be.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It hit me: I wasn\u2019t actually necessary in the way I thought I was. I had done the prep work. I had trained the right person. <em>I just hadn\u2019t given her the space to lead.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The cost of being \u201cin the loop\u201d all the time<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>A lot of founders think the problem is their team\u2019s performance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That&#8217;s sometimes true&#8230;but more often than not, the core issue is the founder\u2019s grip on decision-making.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When you\u2019re copied on every client email, pulled into every project thread, approving every next step, you\u2019re not &#8220;staying in the loop.&#8221; You\u2019re becoming the wall everything has to go through.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That\u2019s not sustainable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That\u2019s not empowering your team.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And it\u2019s definitely not what the CEO of a thriving business should be doing at 10 PM or on the weekend.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Your constant presence isn&#8217;t actually beneficial<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><em>\u201cBut I\u2019m just trying to be helpful.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I hear this a lot.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Listen, I get it: You don\u2019t <em>want<\/em> to be a micromanager. You want to be accessible, supportive, responsive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But your <em>presence<\/em> isn\u2019t the same as your <em>leadership.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here are a few signs you\u2019ve crossed the line between being helpful and being a bottleneck:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>You\u2019re exhausted but don\u2019t know what you can actually let go of<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>You feel like nothing moves forward unless you touch it<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>You still have to remind your team what the priorities are each week<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>You have to follow up to get updates or ensure work gets done<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>If you\u2019re constantly stepping in to answer every question or redirect the team (even in the name of being helpful) you\u2019re actually delaying their ability to step up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Leadership, in this context, means building the structure and expectations that let your team move forward, without needing a push from you every time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The CEO mindset starts with letting go<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Founders who stay stuck in the day-to-day operations instead of stepping fully into the CEO role often aren\u2019t lacking intelligence or effort. But they may be missing the leadership skills their business now requires, skills that aren\u2019t intuitive and often haven\u2019t been taught.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You don\u2019t need to have eyes on every line item or approval on every email to be a great CEO. Consider this your official permission slip to let go of the pressure to know, and control, every single detail of your business.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Letting go isn\u2019t giving up. It\u2019s choosing a new kind of responsibility:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Defining what success looks like and letting your team own the path to get there<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Designing clear roles and responsibilities<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Delegating decisions, not just tasks<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Giving your team the tools, information, and authority to do the job well without circling back to you for approval<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Will they always do it exactly how you would?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>No. Sometimes they\u2019ll do it better.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But they won\u2019t get the chance if you\u2019re still hovering in the inbox, tweaking their copy, or jumping in with the final word.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What leadership looks like in practice<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Here\u2019s what this shift can look like in action:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Instead of reviewing every task, you hold one <a href=\"https:\/\/buildingremote.co\/staging\/how-to-run-successful-11-meetings\/\">high-leverage 1:1<\/a> each week where you coach your team on how to think through problems themselves.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Instead of sitting in on every client call, you hand off delivery with a documented SOP and a debrief rhythm that gives you visibility\u2014without reinserting yourself.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Instead of answering, \u201cWhat should I do?\u201d you reply, \u201cWhat\u2019s your proposed solution?\u201d and hold space for them to take ownership.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>And once your team recovers from the shock of finally being empowered, watch them flourish in ways you never imagined.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They anticipate problems before you ask.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They show initiative.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They start solving instead of escalating.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You stop needing to work late.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You stop constantly checking Slack.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>You stop being the reason things are stuck.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That\u2019s high-impact leadership.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Action plan: Let go with intention<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Here\u2019s a challenge I often give my clients that you can implement this week:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>1. Identify 3 decisions or approvals you\u2019re currently holding onto.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Start small. Look for tasks that take up your time but could be moved to someone else with the right training or structure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>2. Choose one to hand off completely.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Be clear about the outcome, the constraints, due date, and the level of authority. Have them run their work by you for calibration and coaching when they are about halfway through. Then give them the space to own it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>3. Reflect and recalibrate.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Did they execute well? What worked? Where did you over explain or under-resource? Use that insight to improve your next delegation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It&#8217;s okay if it&#8217;s a little bumpy at first. This isn\u2019t a one-time fix. It\u2019s a muscle you build.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And one day, when you check back in and see your team made the right call without you, you won\u2019t just feel proud.
